Peter Benchley Ocean Awards for 2012

Dr. Nancy Rabalais, LUMCON Executive Director and Professor, received the Peter Benchley Ocean Award for Excellence in Science in an awards ceremony at the California Academy of Natural Sciences on June 1. Jim Toomey, creator and cartoonist of “Sherman’s Lagoon,” was the master of ceremonies. Other awardees are in the photo below. Wendy Benchley is the wife of the late Peter Benchley, author of “Jaws,” who spent forty years educating the public and expanding awareness of the importance of protecting sharks and ocean ecosystems. David Helvarg is a journalist, activist, author of “Blue Frontier” and founder and executive director of the Blue Frontier Campaign.
