LUMCON Joins in the Fun of Kids Day at the Houma Civic Center
July 26, 2012
On Saturday, July 21st, the LUMCON Coastal Classroom exhibit was again on the move. This time it traveled to the Houma Civic Center to participate in the 13th Annual Summer Fun Kids Day. Marine education staffers Murt Conover and Sarah Simoneaux exhibited a touch tank filled with marine invertebrates for kids of all ages to examine up close. The tank featured horseshoe crabs, sea stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and hermit crabs.
The event was a great success with many people showing up to enjoy this great in-door summer fun event. In all, 617 people came by the touch tank to learn more about some of the organisms live on the gulf coast. For most, it marked the first time they had ever had to the opportunity to touch many of the organisms.
“As intended, the animals were a hit with everyone. The animals did a wonderful job at being great ambassadors for the gulf coast and LUMCON” said Conover. “Every animal made it back home to the marine center safely and is doing very well.”
