Creation of the Consortium of Research Marine Institutions of the Gulf of Mexico (CiiMar-GoM)

A ceremony in Merida, Yucatan November 8, 2012 culminated efforts to form a consortium of universities and academic institutions interested in supporting the best management practices and sustainable development of the Gulf of Mexico through sound science and knowledge to improve the ecosystem health and economic wealth of the Gulf. The Consortium will promote and strengthen institutional arrangements with mechanisms that favor regional cooperation on oceans, seas and coastal resources.
A Ceremony held in Mérida, Yucatan, the State of Yucatan Governor, Mr. Rolando Zapata Bello as the witness of honor. The Director of the Centre for Research and Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV), Dr. Romeo de Coss Gómez, and the Executive Director of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON), represented by Dr. Nancy Rabalais, signed the letter of intention in a ceremony, where the other nine academic and research institutions were represented as follows:
University of Campeche (UAC), University of El Carmen (UNACAR), University of Veracruz (UV), University Autónomous Juárez Tabasco (UJAT), EPOMEX (UAC), University Autónomous of Yucatán (UADY), Marine Sciences and Limnology Institute, (ICMyL-UNAM), CICATA – IPN and CIDIPORT.
