Steve Joltki, Chef Extraordinaire, Passes Away
February 14, 2013
We are sad to report that the R/V PELICAN’s long-time chef Steve Joltki passed away Saturday, February 2, at his home in Stuart, Florida. This came as a shock to those of us at LUMCON and to his crewmates as Steve was due to begin a hitch this past Sunday. Steve was an extra-ordinary fabulous chef; which made every meal as though you were in a fine dining restaurant. His homemade sauces, fresh meals and deserts were longed for by scientists who were familiar with his style of cooking. He often made dishes of the many types of fresh fish caught in our trawls or by rod (including a certain Captain’s rare billfish which was destined to be mounted). Additionally, all of us will miss Steve’s meals of all different ethnic origins. Steve was always the center piece of our vessel with his ready smile, extensive “sea stories”, his wealth of knowledge and his great sense of humor.
Steve leaves behind his loving wife Helen and his 10 year old son Max. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him and enjoyed his company aboard the R/V PELICAN.
Our deepest heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.
