SAML Meeting Highlights

SAML Meeting Highlights

May 27, 2013

The Southern Association of Marine Laboratories (SAML) met at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL on May 15-17. Quinton White of the JU Marine Science Research Institute proudly showed off the relatively new building that meets LEED* gold-certified green building standards. The laboratory is oriented perpendicular to the St. Johns River in an east-west direction, with most offices and labs having a fantastic view of the river.

The usual exchange of highlights from each of the member laboratories was, as usual, enlightening and provided opportunities for comparative opportunities, problems and shopping for ideas. Special sessions included:

  • RESTORE Act in the Five Gulf States
(Jyotika Virmani FIO, John Valentine DISL, Monty Graham USM, Nancy Rabalais LUMCON)
  • Ocean Observing Post DWH Oil Spill
(Matt Howard TAMU, Steve Wolfe FIO, Jyotika Virmani FIO)

Considerable time was spent discussing the transfer of the NAML business functions and web sites to a private company that handles similar activities for other professional organizations.
