Lights, Camera, Action Students Use Film to Educate Others on Environmental Issues
August 9, 2013
Students from the Hot Springs, Arkansas EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technologies) program travelled to LUMCON in early July to learn more about the impacts of Gulf Hypoxia (the Dead Zone) on local residents and to film a documentary about the issue. EAST program participants identify problems (like the Dead Zone) and then use technology to develop solutions, collaborating with civic and other groups in the process.
Although the students worked very long days to interview as many community leaders, scientists, commercial fisherman, fishing guides, and small business owners as they could, they found time to get footage during a cruise aboard the R/V Acadiana. Their completed film will be shown at a student film competition later this fall.
