Ms. Brandi Thompson, a 2005 participant in the Students and Teachers as Educational Partners as Science (STEPS) workshop sponsored by BTNEP, just learned she has received funding from the state to implement Bayouside Classroom water sampling at her school, Dutchtown Middle School in Prairieville, Louisiana. Brandi is not the first teacher who has received a grant after attending the STEPS workshop - Ms. Louise Dykes received a grant for Bayouside Classroom in 2002-2003. Brandi's grant calls for using Bayouside Classroom as part of a larger environmental education program. Sponsored by the State of Louisiana 8g fund, it is $95,000 for one year and renewable for up to 2 years. Students will decide on 4 water bodies to sample within 10 miles of the school, then sample them eight times during the school year. In addition, they will develop bird habitat and engage in other types of active environmental education. Brandi's student partners Austin and Shalia are looking forward to mentoring other students on this project.

We have added new permanent depth gauges at all three LUMCON sampling sites. They should make sampling around LUMCON much easier since the old PVC depth poles won't need to be taken out each time.
