COASTAL RESTORATION AND ENHANCEMENT

Scholarships, Internships, and Funding

The Coastal Restoration and Enhancement through Science and Technology (CREST) Scholars Program supports undergraduate and graduate studies in fields of interest to CREST (http://www.research.lsu.edu/crest.shtml).  The mission of CREST is to help policymakers, planners and coastal resource managers use the latest science and best technologies to ensure sustainable and productive coastal habitats and communities.

CREST-funded research focuses on projects that have direct application to the development of practical, cost-effective approaches to restoration project design, implementation and monitoring. Areas of emphasis include:

  1. Assessing the performance of planned and existing restoration efforts and their cumulative effects on coastal systems.
  2. Human dimensions of coastal restoration efforts.
  3. Proactive assessments of emerging threats to coastal habitats.

As a collaborating partner in CREST, the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium will support:

  • Students conducting research projects supporting the mission of CREST under the direction of LUMCON faculty and collaborators. Recipients of the awards will be known as CREST Scholars.  (Application coming soon)  Award level: $3,000
  • Internships for upper-level undergraduate students for directed research under the direction of LUMCON staff.  Award level: approximately $3,000, which covers room and board, a small stipend, and supplies, for 8-week residency at the LUMCON DeFelice Marine Center in Cocodrie.
  • Financial support for participation in courses at the LUMCON DeFelice Marine Center in Cocodrie, such as Wetland Vegetation and Coastal Field Geology. Award level: variable; covers room and board, course fees, textbooks.

Any student receiving a research award or internship will be expected to present the results of his/her research at a CREST or other relevant meeting in the year following the award.  In the case of LUMCON internships and course scholarships, the students will participate in the intern symposium held at LUMCON.  All recipients will write a report on the work done.   Dr. Nancy N. Rabalais, Executive Director for LUMCON, will administer the program with the assistance of Nicole Cotten, the LUMCON University Education Coordinator, ncotten@lumcon.edu.  Application forms for internships and summer program scholarships are available at: http://www.lumcon.edu/education/university/summer/Apply.asp
