A Big Day at LUMCON!
April 30, 2013
Baby alligators, sea stars, fiddler crabs and many, many people showed up at the Marine Center on April 13th for the LUMCON Open House celebration. There were numerous attractions for visitors of all ages – air boat rides for ages 3 and up, a baby alligator display, a touch tank with sea critters, fiddler crab races and lots of science-oriented activities and displays, including the opportunity to drive a model ROV (remotely operated vessel).
Open House was not just for families and children, however. The Coastal Restoration Master Plan panel discussion, which took place from 12:30 – 1:30 in the auditorium, was well attended. In addition, LUMCON faculty members were on hand to answer questions, or as in the case of Dr. Ed Chesney, give demonstrations of preferred catch and release techniques for people who enjoy recreational fishing.
The majority of Open House visitors came from Houma and the surrounding area; however, there were numerous visitors from throughout Louisiana and even states as far away as Connecticut and Hawaii!
LUMCON would like to thank all the volunteers, visitors and sponsors whose support made the event possible!
