Ocean Commotion

October 28, 2013

The Louisiana Sea Grant College Program has sponsored Ocean Commotion at LSU’s Pete Marovich Assembly Center for the last 16 years, and LUMCON passed its 10th anniversary for attendance a while ago. LUMCON was there again this year with a touch tank of live sea creatures attended to by Murt and John Conover. Nancy Rabalais, Executive Director, attended for the first time and helped with the Dauphin Island Marine Lab display of dead sea creatures. While the DISL table said “Please Touch,” there were mixed emotions among the children and adult chaperones as to whether to touch the slimy and rubbery-looking octopus and sea cucumber. The sea shells received a better reception. The attendees were much more captivated by the living sea urchins, starfish, hermit crabs, juvenile horseshoe crab and sea anemones in the seawater touch tank at the LUMCON display. Murt estimated that we saw over 400 of the attendees but unfortunately missed a few hundred more as the crowds moved through the displays. Thank you LUMCON for being there!
