Library Hme
The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) Library is available as an internship
site for graduate-level students who have completed at least two semesters toward their
MILS/MLIS or MLS.
Applications will be accepted on a continuing basis, and internships may be completed
during spring & summer semesters. Room and board is available on-site, and will be
provided by LUMCON. Tuition is remitted to the home institution and credit will be
awarded based on the number of person-hours completed (40 person-hours per credit hour).
Prior library experience and undergraduate
degree in science are not necessary.
The LUMCON Library comprises a small, but core collection of marine science-related
materials in a variety of formats including journals, newsletters, newspapers, government
documents, books, microfilms, microfiche and maps. The Library primarily serves the
research and education faculty and staff at the Marine Center in Cocodrie, LA as well as
faculty and students of Consortium-member institutions. The Library is also a member of the
LOUIS consortium for academic libraries.
The internship will comprise both field experiences, encompassing many operations of a
special library, and a special project in technical services. John Conover,
Librarian, will give the intern an overview of reference services, technical
services, administration management, and will guide the intern through special projects.
The LUMCON Library is equipped with OCLC, Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Electronic
Resources, NOTIS and Ariel Software for Distant Education, and Interlibrary Loan Request.
The library houses three IBM PC computers with Internet access.
