R/V PELICAN - Toll-free TracPhone Service

The PELICAN is equipped with a Inmarsat A satellite KVH Tracphone with dispatch service. The standard number is (877) 275-6488. However, there is a much less costly way to use the system which is called Dispatch Service. It is the preferred method for contacting the vessel.

To call the PELICAN using Dispatch Service, do the following:

1. dial 1-800-970-0652

2. wait until you hear about 3-4 beeps and enter 1-2-3-4-# (pound key)

Note: this activates the system on the boat. The phone on the boat will not ring, so it is up to you to get the person’s attention in the wheelhouse.

3. hit the 4 key to talk (do not hold it down). The phone has about a two second delay, so after pushing the 4 key wait about two seconds before talking.

4. hit the * (star key) after talking or to listen (do not hold it down).

5. when someone on the PELICAN responds, you do not have to hit any more buttons. They control the conversation, and it is much like talking on a VHF radio.

6. If at anytime the connection seems lost, try hitting the 4 key to talk, and the * key to listen. This will sometimes reconnect the conversation.
