Upper Deck

936 sq. ft. above labs, galley and mess. The ship's hydro winches and 2 after control stations are located on this deck A starboard aft control station contains complete ship's controls including bow thruster, hydro winch controls, J-frame controls, remote readout for hydro winches, and a VHF radio. This station gives full view of main deck and is enclosed and is air-conditioned. A center aft control station has only ship's controls ( including bow thruster). This station is located behind the stack with full view of back deck, and is not enclosed. A small aluminum foam collared boat is carried on a rack above this deck, along the port aft rail. Access to the ship's mast observation platform (crow's nest) is located above science .

Ship's navigation (radar domes, GPS antennas) and communication antennas are located above the wheelhouse. Air conditioner compressors are mounted centerline above the staterooms. Access to the area above the wheelhouse and the observation platform is restricted. Instruments requiring high incident light (incubators, etc.) may be placed on this deck above the upper deck science quarters. Care should be taken to restrict the flow of seawater over the cabin.

A Communications (Comms.) Office (Appendix A) in the cabin on the Upper Deck has limited dry counter space and a shared use computer available for use by the science party.

Other items on this deck include:
· Life Rafts: Two 10 man inflatable life rafts are located along the rail mid-ships port and starboard. Extra life jackets (20) are carried in a locker on the port aft railing.
· Life rings: 8 total, 6 with water lights.
· Damage control locker: Located aft of the centerline control station. This locker contains equipment to be used by the ship's crew during emergencies.

There is very little unused space on this deck. Some scientific gear (coring pipe, etc.) can be stored along the rails.
