Field
Equipment

  • Race Track Flume:
Located in the Wet Lab with running salt water.....
  • LDV:
Available for use in the Wet Lab with the Flume....
  • Most field equipment is also available for use in the Flume.
  • Sontek Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter:
  • Ocean Optics Fiber Optic Oxygen Meter:
  • PME Micro-conductivity/Temperature Meter
  • LiCor Quantum/Radiometer/Photometer
  • Diving PAM Underwater Fluorometer
  • Campbell CR10X Data Loggers
  • Eureka Environmental Manta Water Quality Probe
  • Nortek Aquadopp Current Profiler
  • Laser Doppler Velocimeter:

TSI two channel LDV for high spatial and temporal resolution measurements of water velocity. The LDV is capable of measuring downstream and vertical velocities with data rates in the kHz range. The sample volume is less than 1 mm3.
    Manufactured by TSI Inc.

    Sontek Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV):

The ADV can be used in real time mode in the LUMCON Flume or can be deployed independently at a field site. It is capable of 3-D velocity measurements at rates up to 50 Hz. The sample volume is approximately 1 cm3
    Manufactured by Sontek .

Ocean Optics Fiber Optic Oxygen Meter:

Oxygen concentration in measured at the tip of a 300 micron optical fiber. The fiber is coated in a dye that fluoresces in blue light. Fluorescence is quenched in the presence of oxygen. Thus the oxygen concentration is inversely proportional to the amount of fluorescence.
Manufactured by Ocean Optics -(Model SF2000)

    PME Micro-conductivity/Temperature Meter:

Conductivity is measured at the tip of this glass needle probe. The sensor, which is 500 microns in width, consists of four platinum electrodes.
    Manufactured by PME -(Model 125)

    LiCor Quantum/Radiometer/Photometer:

This system is used to measure photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). An underwater housing is available for use in wet and submerged environments.
    Manufactured by LiCor -(Model LI-250)

    Diving PAM Underwater Fluorometer:

Pulse Amplitude Modulation Fluorometry is a relatively new technique for measuring photosynthesis rates of plants or corals in their natural environment. The PAM technique takes advantage of chlorophyll fluorescence.
    Manufactured by WALZ.

    Campbell CR10X Data Loggers :

The CR10X Dataloggers are manufactured by Campbell Scientific. These data loggers are very versatile, and can be used to collect and store many types of data, including outputs from the Micro-conductivity/Temperature Meter and the Fiber Optic Oxygen Meter. Waterproof housings allow deployment in submerged environments.

Eureka Environmental Manta Water Quality Probe :

The Manta Water Quality Probe from Eureka Environmental is used to collect data along Bayou Terrebonne and Bayou Little Caillou. We use the Manta to collect temperature, conductivity, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (mg/L and percent saturation), and depth. We are currently interested in hypoxia along Bayou Terrebonne and how developed areas affect dissolved oxygen concentrations. The Finelli Lab uses five individual Manta units.

    Nortek Aquadopp Current Profiler:

The Aquadopp Current Profiler manufactured by Nortek AS is a handy tool used to measure the speed and movement direction of a column of water. This unit is also known as an ADCP, or Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler.
